Founded in 1998 by Fr. Mamdouh AbuSada in Beit Sahour—just a few miles from Bethlehem, the birthplace of our Savior Jesus—The School of Joy aims to uplift children with special needs and those from disadvantaged backgrounds in the greater Bethlehem area.
In response to the challenging political and economic conditions affecting our region, many children, especially those struggling academically or from poor families, have been forced to leave school and seek refuge on the streets. Moved by the increasing number of school dropouts and the pleas of worried parents, Fr. Mamdouh established The School of Joy to provide a safe, nurturing environment for these children. Initially, six dedicated teachers, working for less than half the usual salary, were recruited, and the school was equipped with basic supplies, thanks to donations from both local and international supporters. Today, the school continues to rely on the generosity of donors, along with modest fees from families who can afford to contribute.
The School of Joy currently serves 80 children aged 6 to 14. It offers a welcoming home for impoverished, orphaned, and special needs children, regardless of race, religion, or background. With a growing demand for its services, the school has a waiting list of at least 15 more at-risk children in need of support.
Many of the students we serve struggle with low academic achievement due to factors such as minimal brain damage, poor home environments, or previous inadequate schooling. We work with children diagnosed with dyslexia, right hemisphere learning disorders, autism spectrum disorder, and other challenges, helping them reach their full potential in a supportive and loving community.
